Supporting School Libraries
Although school libraries in Saskatchewan are a vital part of the educational system in this province, continuous advocacy is required to remind politicians, board members, and the general public of the importance of the job performed by teacher-librarians and school library associates. Below is a collection of advocacy tools, exemplars, and research to help teacher-librarians and their allies advocate for properly staffed, strong school library programs in all of our Saskatchewan school divisions
AASL Crisis Toolkit
The American Association of School Libraries has put together a useful toolkit to help you organize in the event that you are faced with immediate reductions or eliminations.
Gather and Share Data
It is important to gather data on your school library program on a regular basis, and use that data to tell a story about your school library program and the teacher librarian's essential role in that program. Tell a story with your report, and keep it short - one page in length. Jennifer LaGarde offers some great advice on how to build these reports here. Share these reports with everyone - principals, super intendents, coordinators, consultants, directors of education, and Board members. A sample of a possible report is included below:
