Jing is a quick way to capture a screenshot or screencast for technology support or demonstration purposes. Jing enables the user to take a picture of part of the screen or the entire screen. Once the user captures the wanted area in the picture, the screenshot can be typed upon, have arrows drawn, and highlight sections of the text.

Jing must be downloaded and installed on a Mac or PC prior to use. Once installed, Jing displays as a small orange circle at the top of the screen and runs in the background until needed. Hover over the circle, and Jing displays three rays: Capture, History, and More. The Capture option allows the user to select an area and decide whether to save it as an image or a video. The image can be shared via Twitter, posted to Facebook, or saved as a file. Any of these operations takes just a single click.

Jing can also be used to create a screencast, a video of the user’s screen. Users select the area of the screen that they would like to show, click the record button and begin talking. Jing will capture the user’s voice for a maximum of five minutes.

Getting Started

  1. Install Jing.
  2. Use the Capture option to select an area and decide whether to save it as an image or a video.
  3. Record the directions to an assignment or instructions for using a technology tool. As an alternative, create a narrated slideshow using Jing.
