Hopscotch

Hopscotch is an iPad application dedicated to teaching students the coding language. Hopscotch’s functionality is an “easy-to-use visual programming language” that enables students to create their own games, animations. stories, interactive art, and apps.

Hopscotch simplifies complex programming by letting users drag and drop intuitive blocks of code. The quirky characters make the app particularly appealing to students. Through trial, error, and constant iteration, students discover how to manipulate the code, thinking critically and creatively, to make these characters perform a multitude of actions. Individually or in cooperation with others via the share feature, students develop understanding of programming, design, and other computer applications.

Projects can be saved or shared with peers via email. All projects and those shared with them are stored on the iPad and accessible at any time, perfect for use for group and individual work.

Getting Started

  1. Download the Hopscotch application.
  2. Click on ‘Puppy Draw’. Complete the step by step tutorial on how to draw a puppy using coding.
  3. Have you, your colleagues, or your students create a project by selecting a Sprite and adding code to make it move in a variety of ways.
  4. Share a project. In the project editor, tap on the button with three lines in the top-left corner. From the drop-down menu that appears, choose at least one of two ways to share a project:
    • By email or Twitter: Select Share. 
    • By uploading to the Hopscotch community: Select Upload.  Provide the project title. and Hopscotch nickname.  Tap ‘Upload’, and the project will appear in the ‘Newest’ tab of the community.
