Feedly is a news aggregator application for various Web browsers and mobile devices running iOS and Android, and is also available as a cloud-based service. It compiles news feeds from a variety of online sources for the user to customize and share with others.
Logging in requires the use of a Google account, which means users will need an account. Once Feedly is granted the right to access the Google account, it quickly loads the homepage. It consists of three sections: The main content section (which houses Featured Stories), a column to the left (which showcases sections for fresh stories, saved stories, and a tool for adding new sources), and a sidebar to the right (which displays feeds). The layout is basic and easy to navigate. Feedly has several themes and category views to allow further customization. Feedly also taps social media to showcase links shared in the user’s feeds. After setting up Facebook and Twitter credentials, Feedly displayed friends’ shared links in the right hand column. Feedly can be shared to Evernote for bookmarking and to Google+, Twitter, and other social networks. Featured stories are accompanied by thumbnail images and links that let an article be saved or marked as read. Saved articles remain in the main content area, but those marked as read immediately disappear to the “Saved” category and are replaced with new stories as they become available. |
